November 2006

This and millions more monarch butterflies greeted my friend Jay Root and me on a November weekend canoe outing down 26 miles of the Devil's River.  I'll point you to more pics from the trip in an upcoming blog post.

Web Tip: Fresh Content is Your Friend

Web Tip: Fresh Content is Your Friend

Did you know that adding new content regularly to your web site is a great way to improve your site's overall search engine rankings?  Consider the logic:  In a sea of content about just about any topic one can fathom, search tools like Google will generally rank pages with newer content higher than other pages, given all other factors are equal.

Of course, many factors play into how well a page ranks within search results.  Quality of content, the existence of key words and phrases, a page's HTML architecture, and links to your pages from other web sites are all important.  But as you understand and master these techniques, then frequency of updates may be an area where your efforts will pay off in your ongoing mission to drive more prospects to your web site.

Updating your site frequently also has other benefits.  New content breeds credibility, and helps provide a meaningful experience for your site's audience.  These factors can differentiate your company, particularly if your firm is likely to be evaluated largely on the basis of your web site, as is the case with many tourist destinations.

FAQs, blogs and news sections are all great candidates for types of content that lend themselves to frequent updates.  If you are considering adding these or similar features to your site, consider moving slowly to avoid biting off more than you can chew.  Adding content regularly can turn into more of a commitment than you're ready for, and it takes practice to become proficient.  Start small, and then expand your contribution of new content as your abilities allow.  Enlist the help of other employees; even your customers and suppliers.

Now go, and publish!
